Title: Innovative Approaches to Social Sustainability in Rural Community Radio: A Case Study of Mann Deshi Tarang Vahini. Sanjay Sahebrao Jagadale, PhD Scholar of MIT ADT UNIVERSITY. Abstract This paper investigates the role of Mann Deshi Tarang Vahini, a rural community radio station in Maharashtra, India, as a catalyst for social sustainability and community empowerment. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study captures qualitative data from interviews, focus group discussions, and observations, and quantitative data through surveys with 400 listeners. The findings indicate that Mann Deshi Tarang Vahini’s programs on health, education, and economic empowerment have significantly impacted its rural audience. Health programs, like Radio Doctor, have improved public health awareness and behaviors, while Majhi Radio Shala provided essential educational content during the COVID-19 lockdown, reaching students with limited internet access. Additionally, Sakhi Sajani promoted financial literacy and small business skills, fostering economic resilience, particularly among women. The station’s participatory model ensures that programming is responsive to community needs, fostering listener engagement and trust. This study demonstrates the station’s potential as a model for rural media, offering valuable insights into community radio’s capacity for fostering sustainable, long-term social change in underserved areas.
