The Mullaperiyar Dam, built in 1895 on the Periyar River, has been a focal point of contention between the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu for over a century. The water-sharing dispute revolves around Tamil Nadu's rights to use the dam for irrigation and drinking water, while Kerala raises concerns about the dam's safety and its impact on local communities. This paper examines the historical context of the conflict, key legal battles, and political negotiations that have shaped the debate, along with proposed solutions to resolve the stalemate. It also explores the role of the judiciary, interstate relations, and environmental safety in shaping policy outcomes. By analyzing the evolution of the conflict, this study aims to provide insights into effective water-sharing governance mechanisms for interstate disputes in India.
