Title

NON-MONETARY MOTIVATION AND TEACHER’S PERFORMANCE AMONG PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KAMPALA CENTRAL DIVISION, UGANDA.

Abstract

The study aimed to explore the relationship between non-monetary motivation and teachers' performance in public secondary schools within Kampala Central Division. It was structured around three specific objectives: (i) to investigate the relationship between promotion and teachers' performance, (ii) to examine the relationship between training and teachers' performance, and (iii) to assess the relationship between accommodation and teachers' performance in these schools. A quantitative research approach was adopted, utilizing a correlational research design. The study's population consisted of 191 teachers, selected through simple random sampling. Data collection was conducted using a closed-ended questionnaire. The gathered data were coded and entered into the SPSS statistical program, which was used to generate descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlations to analyze the relationships between the study's dependent and independent variables. The findings revealed that (i) there is a statistically significant positive relationship between promotion and teachers' performance, (ii) there is a statistically significant positive relationship between training and teachers' performance, and (iii) there is a statistically significant positive relationship between accommodation and teachers' performance in public secondary schools within Kampala Central Division. The study recommended that school management in Kampala Central should implement a fair promotion process based on merit, accessible to all regardless of tribe, religion, or gender. It also suggested the introduction of bursary schemes to support teachers pursuing further education. Furthermore, the study advised that teacher accommodation should be well-maintained through regular repairs, and those not accommodated on school premises should receive housing allowances.
