FASTag, an electronic toll collection system in India operated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to streamline toll payments. Established in 2014 and later expanded, FASTag enables automatic toll deductions as vehicles pass through toll plazas, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and improve fuel efficiency. This system has gained significant adoption, especially since becoming mandatory on national highways in 2021. Despite the advantages, users report issues, including technical glitches, double charges, and delays in scanning, which occasionally result in queues. To address these concerns, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), in charge of FASTag’s technical ecosystem, has developed guidelines for seamless interoperability and customer assistance. Overall, while FASTag presents a significant step forward in toll management and environmental impact reduction, continuous improvements are necessary to enhance user satisfaction and operational efficiency.
