Title

An Intelligent Surface with Broadband Reconfiguration for 5G Millimeter-Wave Uses

Abstract

A small number of published works demonstrate practical implementations and experimental results, despite the growing interest in reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) for millimetre-wave (mm-wave) bands and the substantial theoretical work reported by the communication community. As far as the authors are aware, no experimental findings for RISs operating in the n257 and n258 mm-wave bands have been documented in the published literature. We provide a new wideband RIS design in this study that spans the whole mm-wave 5G n257 and n258 frequencies. In simulations, the unit cell can use 1-bit p-i-n switches to maintain a phase difference of 180◦ ± 20◦ and a reflection magnitude larger than −2.8 dB within the frequency range of 22.7 to 30.5 GHz (29.3% bandwidth). Through the excitation of two nearby high-order resonances (2.5 and 3.5 f), the suggested unit cell architecture with four circular cuts and lengthy vias could achieve wideband performance. An angular stability of ±30◦ can be maintained by the periodic unit cells. A 20 × 20 RIS array with a dimension of 7.1λ × 7.1λ is developed and constructed based on the suggested unit cell. The measurement findings show that the proposed RIS is a viable option for 5G mm-wave applications since it can maintain a 3 dB peak gain variation bandwidth among different array configurations within 22.5 to 29.5 GHz (26.9%) and with a beam scanning capacity of 50◦.
