Title

Globalization and Tribes of Himachal Pradesh-Socio-economic Perspective

Abstract

Globalization refers to the process of increasing interconnectedness and interdependence among countries, businesses, and people worldwide. This phenomenon affects various aspects of life, including economics, politics, culture, and technology. It is a process of transformation of regional or local phenomena into global ones. This process has had a multifaceted impact on the lifestyle of tribes in Himachal Pradesh, India. This region, known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse indigenous communities, has experienced both positive and negative effects due to globalization. Gaddi, Gujjar and Kinnara tribes totally constitute 82 percent of the total Scheduled Tribes population in the state. The other important tribes are Bodh, Pangwala and Swangla follow in the rank but with lesser numbers. Lahaula, Jad, Domba and Beta tribes count less than one percent of the total STs in the state. The present study depicts how the process of globalization makes its impact upon the tribal society. Globalization has significantly affected the Gaddi, Gujjar, and Kinnara tribes in Himachal Pradesh. Economically, these tribes have faced both opportunities and challenges. Globalization has opened markets for their traditional crafts and livestock, increasing income. However, it has also led to land pressures and competition with outsiders, affecting their traditional livelihoods. Socially, there has been a shift as modern education and external influences challenge traditional customs and social structures. The ultimate impact is a blend of increased economic opportunities and cultural tensions, requiring careful balance and adaptation.
