Title

Non-Governmental Organizations Sponsored Projects Capacity Building and Social Economic Welfare of Beneficiaries in Rwanda: A Case of Hand in Hand Project in Kayonza District

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the contribution of Non-Governmental Organizations capacity building sponsored project in beneficiaries’ welfare in Rwanda, a case of Hand in Hand job creation project implemented by AJEPRODHO in Kayonza District of Eastern Province. The study sought to address the following specific objectives: To identify capacity building activities of hand in hand project in Kayonza District, to investigate the constraints encountered in implementation of Non-Governmental Organizations sponsored projects capacity building, to analyse the relationship between capacity building projects and social economic welfare of beneficiaries. The quantitative research design was adopted. The data collection done in 2015 the target population was composed of 8478 beneficiaries of Hand in Hand project in Kayonza District, Yamane formula was used to determine the sample size of 99 beneficiaries and random sampling was used to select them from different Village Saving and Loan Associates, and 5 project implementers with total number of 104. Both primary and secondary data have been used, structured interviews and questionnaires were used to gather information, from project beneficiaries and implementers, and data also have been interpreted, Descriptive Statistic based on table and frequency were used to analyze the collected data, conclusions were drawn based on analysis done, in reporting findings tables and statistical with discussion were used.Activities of Hand in Hand project in Kayonza District are, to create Village Saving and Loan Associates groups, train people and help them to get new skills about business activities, start businesses and be familiar with them, get the market for their products help them also to get financial services, Initiate people to participate in local community and other activities planned by the government. Challenges and constraints in implementing Donor sponsored capacity building projects are physical factors such as climate that can hinder investments and income of beneficiaries, beneficiaries’ low level of education, shortage of timeline of projects low of participation of stakeholders such as local governance. Effects of capacity building projects on beneficiaries’ welfare is that they develop and strengthen their skills, help them to save and get money and this money can help them to get basic needs such as food shelter, clothes, health insurance to educate their children as they pay school fees and buy school materials, to start and run small businesses, to get market for their product to cooperate with others their local community and to participate in government activities. The study recommend that Projects planners should increase the number of Village agents, so that they keep on train people and form other groups, after the closing of the projects’ activities
