The current study primarily deals with the new feminist interpretations of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy Othello wherein female characters adhere to strict silence. The African-American female author Toni Morrison and Mallian singer Rokia Traore attempt to provide free and fearless voice to the marginalised and suppressed women characters from the annals of history who are controlled, subjugated, and overpowered by the patriarchal society. The incorporation of these emancipated women characters disrupts the constructed western literary canon that represents the patriarchal codes of representation in the dramatic performance. To counter this hegemonic tradition, the research demonstrates how the female writers from the ‘orient’ mimic the literary techniques of the ‘occident’, and how this mimicry turns into a mockery—an appropriation as critical tool of the third world academia to counter constructed hierarchical power relations of the West. Morrison succeeds in forming sisterhood across mind-forged boundaries among women from varied socio-cultural background and paving way for their absolute freedom of expression.
