PREVALENCE OF ABO AND RHESUS BLOOD GROUPS IN HIV POSITIVE PATIENTS OF SOME ETHNIC GROUPS IN PLATEAU STATE, NORTH CENTRAL, NIGERIA.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: The study on Prevalence of ABO and Rhesus Blood Groups in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Positive Patients of Some Ethnic Groups in Plateau State, North Central, Nigeria, was aimed to identify the blood group that was more susceptible to HIV infection among Afezere, Berom, Goemai, Ngas, Nwaghavul and Tarok, tribes. Methodology: A total of 600 samples were collected consisting of 366 females and 234 males. The Study age range was within 2-65years. Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay test kits were used for HIV screening while blood grouping test kits were used for blood group screening. The study was conducted at Plateau State University Teaching Hospital Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. Data collected was analyzed statistically to correlate blood group to HIV infection in all the subjects selected for the study. Study duration was six month. Convenience sampling technique, correlation study design and descriptive statistics were adopted for this study. Result: Female population was higher than male. O+ blood group was more common among HIV patients. Berom ethnic group had the highest O+ blood group to HIV infection. B- blood group was the most uncommon among HIV patients of this study. Conclusion: Positive blood groups are more susceptible to HIV than negative blood groups
