Valtoco® is a new FDA-approved nasal spray form of diazepam used for the treatment of acute, intermittent, and stereotypic episodes of frequent seizure activity in epilepsy patients six years of age and older. The intranasal route makes Valtoco® more user-friendly and less invasive than rectal or IV administration as it shows a rapid onset of action. Patients can self-administer it outside of a hospital setting. Valtoco® offers less variability in plasma concentration compared to rectal diazepam. The most common side effects reported were mild nasal irritation and lacrimation. This review paper outlines the effect, formulation and overall applications of the nasal spray form of diazepam named Valtoco.
