Title

Stability study of in process Bhavita Nishamalaki Churna (BNC) with end product Sapta Nishamalaki Swarasa Bhavita Nishamalaki Churna (SNSBNC) & Ekavinshati Nishamalaki Swarasa Bhavita Nishamalaki Churna (ENSBNC) with respect to baseline diagnostic modalities of microbiology

Abstract

Background: Nishamalaki Churna is widely used Ayurvedic drug in the management of Madhumeha. The process of giving Bhavana to the powder of a drug by its own Swarasa or Kwatha, reduces the dosage of the medicine, but in case of Nishamalaki, it also increases the hygroscopicity of the drug making it more susceptible to microbial contamination. Thus, to observe the stability of Bhavita Nishamalaki Churna against microbial contamination prepared and stored in various climatic conditions and temperatures, the current investigation was conducted. Aim: To study the stability of Sapta Nishamalaki Swarasa Bhavita Nishamalaki Churna & Ekavinshati Nishamalaki Swarasa Bhavita Nishamalaki Churna and inspect microbial contamination in the intermediate and finished product at different time intervals and at different climatic conditions (different temperature and humidity set ups). Materials and Methods: Samples of Sapta & Ekavinshati Nishamalaki Swarasa Bhavita Nishamalaki Churna along with their intermediate products during the preparation were studied to inspect microbial contamination at different climatic conditions. The study was conducted at Microbiology Laboratory, Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), Jamnagar, Gujarat, India. Observations & Results: The initial microbiological study of Sapta Nishamalaki Swarasa Bhavita Nishamalaki Churna & Ekavinshati Nishamalaki Swarasa Bhavita Nishamalaki Churna was carried out on the 97th day and 7th day of its preparation, respectively. Further studies were carried out at regular time intervals up to 579 days and 496 days respectively. Conclusion: In microbiological study of Sapta Nishamalaki Swarasa Bhavita Nishamalaki Churna & Ekavinshati Nishamalaki Swarasa Bhavita Nishamalaki Churna, growth of microorganisms either bacterial or fungal was not found till 579 days and 496 days respectively from the date of preparation, which shows its intact stability and good shelf life.
