Title

Impact of climate change in North-East India

Authors

Abstract

The North-East region of India has experienced notable changes in the pattern of major climatic variables such as rainfall and temperature. Average temperatures are projected to increase in almost all the districts of the region while annual rainfall is also reported to increase in few districts. The climate-induced natural disasters like drought and flood and are the major threats of climate change and the incidence of these natural disasters are increasing in the recent years over the region. Climate change is now a very serious global problem for all living being including human. It even creates serious threat to the future existence of living being. It has direct impact on agriculture, human health, forestry, biodiversity, water resources, energy, and river and wetlands infrastructure. Global average air temperature is increasing by 0.74°C in the period 1906–2005 (IPCC, 2007a). Climate Change affects all countries in the world. Human activities, different abiotic factors like latitude, altitude, topography, ocean current and biotic factors like transpiration, photosynthesis etc are the main cause for the climate change. Extreme weather conditions like drought and floods have become more intense and more frequent, which affect the livelihoods of people, especially those in developing countries. Through this paper, it is tried to highlight the changing livelihood scenario in North East India due to different phenomenon of climate change like drought and flood. It is reported that due to climate change different climate sensitive economic activities like agriculture is mostly affected. The people, related in this sector are more vulnerable and face many livelihood problems, which lead them in a miserable situation and their livelihood is threatening.
