Title

Morphological analysis and Molecular Phylogenetic analysis of Karyorelictea and Heterotrichea (Phylum Ciliophora)

Abstract

The ciliate class Heterotrichea Stein, 1859 are diverse taxon. Traditionally these ciliates are defined by somatic dikinetids bearing postciliodesmata, by an oral apparatus consisting of paroral membrane, an adoral zone of membranelles as well as by pattern of nuclear division involving extra nuclear microfibrils. The Classification and evolutionary hypothesis were proposed over the years based on the morphology and somatic infraciliature. With the advent of molecular tools, proper taxonomical affiliations and evolutionary pattern were hypothesized by many authors all over the world and provided great knowledge on this class. Even though several authors contributed abundant reports on these ciliate over the last 250 years, the knowledge of heterotrichs from tropical countries like India is not adequate in terms of integrated systematics. On this note, the present study aimed to characterize heterotrichs by means of morphological and molecular methods (18S rDNA and phylogenetic analysis) and subsequently resulted in the characterization of 11 isolates ascribed to 7 species from Postciliodesmatophora. Moreover, the first reports on cytoplasmic endosymbionts from India on Blepharisma sp. were detected and characterized by FISH methods.
