The diasporic state – spatially or emotionally – is a kind of ‘neither nor’ or ‘either or’ or at times ‘both’, oscillating in between various levels of consciousness, of which the writer himself may not be aware. The yearning for home finds its best expression only in moments of exile. From the moment of his landing on the alien soil, he seeks ‘freedom’ but at heart, he knows that he has come out of volition and feels ‘ashamed’. Writing about home is an ‘abundant recompense’ for a diasporic writer, as he cannot hope to get back his home in its pristine form. When it is the case of a twice-hyphenated (Iranian-Parsi-Indian-Canadian) writer like Mistry, the various cultural pulls and counter pulls need to be considered. Often such a multi-cultural influence lands an author in a zone of cultural ambivalence or hybridity where the author experiences identification with and alienation from the culture.
