Mahesh Dattani, a prominent voice in contemporary Indian theatre, is known for his portrayal of social realism. This abstract analyzes how Dattani’s plays employ social realism to engage with and critique the socio-cultural challenges of modern India. Through this genre, which emphasizes the authentic and critical depiction of everyday life, Dattani delves into themes such as gender, sexuality, family relationships, and caste. Dattani’s work is characterized by its realistic portrayal of characters and settings, reflecting the complexities of Indian society. Plays such as Bravely Fought the Queen, Final Solutions, and Dance Like a Man reveal the intricacies of marginalized identities, family conflicts, and social hierarchies. Through these narratives, Dattani challenges traditional norms and offers a critical examination of social issues, including gender roles, communal tensions, and class divisions. This study reviews existing literature on Dattani’s social realism, highlighting key themes and motifs in his plays. It explores how his realistic depictions of social issues contribute to a deeper understanding of contemporary Indian life, emphasizing the role of theatre in reflecting and critiquing societal norms. By engaging with various scholarly perspectives, this review underscores Dattani’s contributions to modern theatre and his impact on the discourse surrounding social realism.
