Title

Effect of Corticotomy in reducing treatment time in patients undergoing fixed Orthodontic treatment : A Systematic Review

Abstract

In the recent times the request for shorter treatment time has increased in patients undergoing Orthodontic treatment.Almost every conventional therapy completes in minimum of 2 years(1).Several factors influence this time period such as severity of the case, treatment planning and patient cooperation.Prolonged treatment duration is one of the main concerns in orthodontics therapy. To accelerate the tooth movement several techniques are there to increase the velocity of the tooth movement which is coined as “Accelerated Orthodontics”which can be divided into surgical, non surgical and pharmacological.(3) The aim of this systemic review is to see the efficacy of coticotomy which is surgical procedure in which cortical bone is cut without hampering the medullary bone in accelerating the Orthodontic tooth movement. OBJECTIVE a)Primary objective is to evaluate the efficacy of corticotomy in reducing treatment time in patients undergoing fixed Orthodontic therapy. b)Secondary objective is to evaluate post corticotomy pain and discomfort. MATERIALS AND METHODS A search for randomised clinical trials was performed in databases PUBMED,SCOPUS,COCHRANE.Review manager software was used to evaluate the study to see any biases present.Overall strength of the available evidence was evaluated by Grades of Recommendations assessment.Searches were not restricted in terms of any languages or publication dates. SELECTION CRITERIA Different RCTs were included utilizing different randomization methods such as parallel, computer generated, split mouth etc. These studies are in vivo clinical studies where they evaluated if corticotomy helped in patients undergoing fixed Orthodontic therapy. DATA COLLECTION Among 128 datas identified, only 5 articles included and further analysed. MAIN RESULTS All the studies analysed in this review have shown that corticotomy helps in reducing treatment time in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment.
