Title

IMPACT OF COUNSELLING ON CAREER INDECISION

Abstract

Career decision-making is a critical aspect of life, especially for young adults, yet it often presents significant challenges. This issue is increasingly problematic for graduate students, especially in India, where millions of graduates remain unemployed due to a mismatch between their skills and job market demands. Studies show that only a small percentage of graduates are deemed employable by multinational companies, and many students face difficulty finding suitable employment even after graduation. The oversupply of university graduates has exacerbated the situation, as the job market is saturated and companies are reducing hiring in response to economic factors like recession. Consequently, career choices have become more complex, and few professional positions offer personal growth or fulfilment. The anxiety surrounding career decisions often leads to indecision, particularly among young adults aged 18 to 23, a period marked by societal pressure to succeed in both work and relationships. Psychological factors, such as the uncertainty of self-image and the pressure to conform to familial or societal expectations, can influence career decisions, often leading young people to opt for safer or less fulfilling options. This indecision is compounded by a lack of proactivity and poor self-awareness, which can prevent them from making informed and confident career choices. Ultimately, career decisions for young adults are shaped by multiple factors, including family background, social experiences, and personal identity. Despite the challenges, it remains essential for young adults to recognize their strengths and proactively shape their careers in alignment with their goals and values.
