Title

REVITALIZING HERITAGE: URBAN DESIGN INTERVENTIONS ON SAYYAJI RAO ROAD IN MYSURU

Abstract

Mysuru, a city celebrated for its vibrant cultural heritage and historical importance, exemplifies the intersection of tradition and modernity. As a pivotal urban centre in Karnataka, it has preserved its architectural heritage amidst the challenges posed by urban development. A notable illustration of this is Sayyaji Rao Road, a central artery that functions as both a commercial focal point and a crucial venue for cultural events, particularly the annual Mysuru Dasara Ambari procession. This event, rich in tradition, highlights the road's significance as a place where history, culture, and communal activities come together. This paper investigates the architectural interventions needed to revitalize Sayyaji Rao Road, focusing on the dual aims of conserving heritage and advancing urban modernization. Through an in-depth examination of urban design principles, the research examines how traditional architectural features can be integrated with modern functionalities. Key strategies proposed include enhancing public spaces to encourage community engagement, repurposing historical structures for contemporary use, and incorporating sustainable design principles to promote resilience. The revitalization of local markets and the optimization of public spaces are identified as essential interventions to create adaptable areas for everyday commerce and cultural gatherings. The results underscore the significance of architecture in safeguarding Mysuru's cultural identity while meeting the city's changing urban requirements, presenting a harmonious approach to heritage preservation and modernization.
