Title

Functional capacity in rice mill workers using incremental shuttle walk test: an observational study.

Abstract

This study has been undertaken to evaluate the functional capacity in Rice Mill Workers using Incremental Shuttle Walk Test. Rice Mill Workers constitute a special group from the perspective of occupational health. They are exposed to large amount of dust for long duration. This adversely affects there respiratory health. Incremental Shuttle Walk Test was developed to stimulate a cardiopulmonary exercise test using field walking test. A convenience sampling was selected according to the inclusion criteria the subjects were made to walk according to the Incremental shuttle walk test standard protocol. Parameters such BP, Spo2, RR,HR and Dyspnea score was recorded before and after the test and the number of shuttles were counted. The mean distance covered by the subjects was 380.5 m. And the mean distance covered by the healthy individuals from age group of 41-65 was 639.6m. If these two studies were compared the functional capacity of rice mill workers is considerably reduced. This could be because of inhalation of rice husk which has silica contents which results in fibrosis and nodular lession causing physiologic restriction and impaired gas exchange which could have reduced functional capacity. Moreover, it has been observed that the recovery vitals and pre vitals has significant differences which shows that rice mill workers requires longer duration to reach the pre vitals.
