Title

Trends of Ovarian Cancer Incidence in Ekiti, Southwestern, Nigeria.

Abstract

Background Ovarian cancer is the most lethal female genital cancer and coincidentally, most of the cases usually present with the advanced stage of the disease in our environment. The English literature is very scanty on the time trends of ovarian cancer in Nigeria and hence the pattern of the disease still poorly understood in our part of the world. The main objective of this study was to determine the time trend and incidence of ovary cancer from Ekiti Cancer Registry between 2014 and 2023. The data from Ekiti Cancer Registry are usually extracted from all laboratories, diagnostic centres, wards, clinics, death certificate and autopsy registers from health facilities and hospitals in the catchment area of the registry which are Ado and Ido-Osi Local Government where cancer cases are diagnosed and or managed. The data was abstracted and entered into CanReg 5 database. The analysis was conducted using the CanReg 5 software provided by IARC WHO France via the African Cancer Registry Network ( AFCRN) and The trends of age-adjusted cancer incidence rates were analyzed using Joinpoint regression, which is a software program of the US National Cancer Institute. A total of sixty-six cases of Ovarian Cancer were included. Incidence rates were observed from 2014 to 2023. In conclusion, this study has reiterated the significance of using data from population based cancer registries for epidemiological studies on cancer, and more specifically to monitor the time trends and incidence of cancer in a specific geographical location.
