Title

Can WhatsApp be used as LMS among Pre-service Teachers?

Abstract

With the advancement of technology, our lifestyles also get tremendously changed. It has massively affected our entire educational system. In the demand of time, education is now practised not only in offline mode but also online in large quantities. Different educational technologies assist the e-learning process. Social media has proven a significant role in the education process. WhatsApp is an online messaging tool and is commonly used by almost all educational institutions. However, LMS is another component of the digital learning environment that promotes online discussion, collaboration, training and communication among users. A typical LMS assist the teacher in planning online activities, evaluation, and personalized teaching activities. The study aims to explore whether WhatsApp can be used as LMS by the instructor in pre-service teacher education. This conceptual study deals with the feasibility of WhatsApp in education in comparison to general LMS. The effectiveness of any educational tool is justified by the learning outcome of the students and it depends upon the behavioural intention of users according to the Technology Acceptance Model theory. Therefore, in this study, the behavioural intention of pre-service teachers in using WhatsApp is also discussed.
