Title

From 'the dead end of a wrong direction': Portraits of decay and prospect of redemption in Ted Hughes' 'Remains of Elmet'

Abstract

Hinging on Ted Hughes’ ecopoetics as embodied in his anthology Remains of Elmet, the paper endeavors to examine the text’s poetic milieu that abounds in portraiture of decay in the topography of Elmet and the corroding of its cultural history that follows the decline. The demographic changes as byproduct of post-industrial stagnation and subsequent migration are exploited by Hughes for centralizing his subject – the possibility of healing at the hands of nature. Analyzing this theme, incorporating a reading of four of his poems, in two stages, the paper addresses (i) the problems of decay and degeneration effected by construction of mills (representing industrial development) and chapels (symbolizing religious interference) and conclusively, (ii) the solution of regeneration through salvation of the soul/ humanity

Key Words

Hughes, nature, elemental, degeneration, industry, religion, regeneration, soul
