Title

On a Limitation of Husserl's Phenomenological Method of Doing Philosophy

Abstract

Abstract: The philosophical enterprise of Phenomenology was first systematically developed by Edmund Husserl. So he is credited as the father of phenomenology. He considered that phenomenology is a foundational philosophy and is a method of doing philosophy by the method of reduction or bracketing. It practices presuppositionless philosophy which tries to get at the essence of our knowledge, the primordial or fundamental data of each and every human experience. It is argued that they do descriptive study of the consciousness and perception of the first person experience. The first-hand experience of an individual is the main subject matter in phenomenology. Where is the fundamental data located? Husserl argues that the fundamental data of human knowledge are located in human consciousness. So to understand the immediate data received from experience we must inquire about consciousness. Because for Husserl every information we receive from experience is directly and immediately presented to the consciousness. So the role of philosophy should be to study and apprehend the process of reception of raw data in the consciousness. Eugen Fink (one whose close examination of Phenomenology was recommended by Husserl himself) says that the explanations of phenomenology and the method of reduction should not be taken literally. The explanations should be taken as signs which guide us to the understanding of the meanings and by chance achieve satisfying definitions of the terms of phenomenology. The clear explanation of the concepts of phenomenology can be done by the exercise of analysis of it based on the application of the phenomenological method. Now this position drags phenomenology to the problem of circularity. Hence, the main objective of the study is to find a novel contribution from the problem which says that on one hand we need to analyze the concepts of phenomenology and on the other hand saying that the exercise of analysis should be based on the application of the phenomenological method expounds nothing new, but makes us move on and on in a circular sphere of articulation; this formulation is only an exercise of repetition which would not make it any more easy for the non-phenomenologist.
