Abstract
A descriptive study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice regarding menstrual hygiene among the adolescent girls in the selected urban community of New Delhi. The objectives of the study were; to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of adolescent girls regarding menstrual hygiene, to find the association between knowledge, attitude and practice of adolescent girls with selected demographic variables. After gaining the ethical clearance and formal administrative permission the data collection was done at selected urban community of New Delhi. Research Approach used for the study was quantitative approach and research design was Descriptive Survey. The sample consisted of 100 adolescent girls residing in selected urban community and sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The tools used were a structured knowledge questionnaire, 5 point Likert scale and a checklist was used to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice among adolescents girls. The data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The demographic data revealed that more than half of the adolescent girls (55%) were from 16-19 years of age, majority of samples 92% (92%) belonged to Hindu religion, most of the samples 58 (58%) were from nuclear family, had a family income of <10,000 ie,54 (54%). Most of the adolescent girls attained menarche at 10-12 years of age 52 (52%). Regarding educational qualification majority of them were in secondary school 55(55%). Majority of adolescent girls had some knowledge regarding menstrual hygiene i.e 82 (82%) and 18(18%) did not have any knowledge regarding menstrual hygiene. Most of the girls got information regarding menstrual hygiene from parents 36(36%). Majority of girls use sanitary pads as absorbents 94(94%). The findings revealed that most of the adolescent girls 68 (68%) had average knowledge, 25 (25%) had good knowledge whereas, 7 (7%) had poor knowledge regarding menstrual hygiene. Most of the adolescent girls 63 (63%) had neutral attitude, 24 (24%) had favourable attitude whereas, 13 (13%) had unfavourable attitude towards menstrual hygiene and most of the adolescent girls 54 (54%) had good practice related to menstrual hygiene, 45 (45%) had average practice towards menstrual hygiene whereas, 1 (1%) had poor practice towards menstrual hygiene. The mean knowledge score was 12.13, the mean score of attitude was 43.73 and the mean score of practice was 9.65.There is a significant association between knowledge and selected demographic variables such as age (0.03), education (0.047), source of information (0.004) and absorbent used (0.033) at p <0.05 level of significance. There is a significant association between attitude and selected demographic variables such as age (0.039), monthly family income (0.0372), age of menarche (0.0133), education (0.010), information on menstrual hygiene (0.027), source of information (0.002) and absorbent used (0.020) at p <0.05 level of significance. There is a significant association between practice and selected demographic variables such as age (0.014), monthly family income (0.005), age of menarche (0.01), education (0.006), information on menstrual hygiene (0.049) and source of information (0.001) at p <0.05 level of significance. Through this study we were able to conclude that majority of the adolescent girls had average knowledge, neutral attitude and good practice regarding menstrual hygiene.
