Title

Impact of Off-Season on Hotel Room Operations in Nagpur City

Abstract

This analytical study aims to assess the effects of low and peak tourism demand times on hotel room management in Nagpur city, central India. This dynamic means that demand for services in the accommodation industry is volatile and follows peaks and troughs with different challenges associated with the low demand period for hotels. The off season in Nagpur is usually during the summer and the monsoon period; in effect there is low traffic from tourists and business travellers. These periods lead to an increased vacancies or turnover rate, revenues and productivity of the hotels. This research uses both quantitative and qualitative sources of data collected via self-completed questionnaires and numerical records of financial data and occupancy returns, supported by semi-structured interviews with competent members of the hotel management and key staff. Surveys were administered to 7 luxury, 5 mid-price range, and 8 economy class hotels to capture a holistic picture of operation in off season. The research indicates that the occupancy may decline to about 30%- 40% during the low season which tremendously leads to a decline in the RevPAR and ADR. That is why there are fixed costs such as staff salaries or maintenance that only put pressure on the financial situation. Golf courses, on the other hand, implement the following measures to offset these effects: injuring seasonal fluctuations, running promotional sales, performing other activities, like conferences, and rationalizing the use of employees by offering cross-training programs or resorting to temporary layoffs. They are also used during low demand seasons when carrying out infrastructural development and staff training. Also, from mediums the research finds the new trends for the company to explore in the future that include the expansion of the use of digital marketing, implementation of guest packages that will shift the attention of the company to provide personalized packages and partnership with local businesses for catering to new segments of customers. These approaches not only serve as means to continue operations during periods of low demand, but also to spread revenues, erect a loyal customer base. Before concluding, this paper provides practical implications useful to hotel operators concerned with off-season performance management strategies. Such measures as marketing and sales innovations, organizational changes in operations and revenue technology improvements were cited. Hence, following such strategies, the strategic location of hotels in Nagpur can eliminate the issue of seasonality hence have better profits and increased sustainable growth.
