Title

Reflections of Resilience and Rigorousness: The Poem, ‘Dame’ from the third volume, “Shackles of Shadow” by Dr. N. Ravi Vincent.

Abstract

Abstract In this present composition, I would like to expound on the poem ‘Dame,’ which free heartedly weaves a rich shade of imagery, natural beauty, and personal aspiration, set against the backdrop of the socio-economic challenges faced by the Oromo community. This poem, ‘Dame,’ beautifully begins by painting a vivid picture of ‘Wishing hills,’ ‘mist-capped’ mountains, and ‘laughing landscapes,’ evoking a sense of mysticism and admiration for the natural world. These fundamentals symbolize the hopes and dreams embedded in the community's relationship with nature. As the poem progresses, it contrasts this natural splendor with the harsh realities of life in the countryside, where there is an ‘absence of waters’ and ‘visible hunger cries. The immediacy of fertile lands with the struggles of poverty glaringly highlights the profitable difference faced by the community. The imagery of Rhythmic Rivers, ‘Borxa and Mexi’ in docks, indeed serves as a conceit for the life-giving and sustaining power of nature, which is influenced by the hardships and 'devastating poverty' experienced by the surrounding community.
