Title

Enhancing Marine Clay Stability Through the Incorporation of Recycled Plastic Fibers and Quarry Dust Additives

Abstract

Marine clays pose significant challenges in construction due to their high compressibility and low shear strength. This study investigates the potential of stabilizing marine clay using waste plastic fibres and quarry dust additives, aiming to enhance its engineering properties and promote sustainable construction practices. Initially, the physical, chemical, and mineralogical characteristics of the marine clay were determined through comprehensive testing. Subsequently, index properties such as plasticity, liquidity, shrinkage, and differential free swell were evaluated. The marine clay was then mixed with varying proportions of waste plastic fibres and quarry dust. Compaction tests were conducted on these blended mixtures to determine the optimum moisture content and maximum dry density. The California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test was employed to assess the strength of the treated marine clay samples. The incorporation of waste plastic fibres and quarry dust is expected to improve the shear strength, compressibility, and overall performance of the marine clay, making it more suitable for construction applications. This research contributes to sustainable waste management practices while enhancing the engineering properties of problematic marine clays.
