Title

Analysis of Water Footprint in the Production of Butanol

Abstract

This research investigates the water footprint associated with the production of butanol, a versatile biofuel with promising applications in the renewable energy sector. As concerns regarding water scarcity and environmental sustainability continue to grow, assessing the water consumption patterns throughout the entire life cycle of butanol becomes imperative for establishing its viability as a sustainable alternative to conventional fuels. The life cycle water footprint for lignocellulosic biomass to biobutanol via thermochemical method is presented in this study. The result of this paper demonstrate that the total water use for the whole system is 145.6 L H2O/MJ biobutanol. The total water footprint of the proposed process in this paper is compared with other processes. Total water footprint for wheat straw to biobutanol process using biochemical method, Corn Stover to biobutanol using biochemical method is 271 L H2O/MJ biobutanol, 240 L H2O/MJ biobutanol, respectively so this study showed that lignocellulosic biomass to biobutanol via thermochemical method is promising choice to utilize biomass in terms of water use and has a potential to save water.
