Title

Native American Plant-Based Coagulants: A Sustainable Approach to Water Quality Management

Abstract

With increased global demand for sustainable, cost-effective coagulants for wastewater treatment, interest in plants as alternatives has been heightened. This paper reviews the use of Native American plants for water purification. More importantly, it examines their current applications as natural coagulants in wastewater treatment. Some key plants like cattails and pinecones are being analyzed for their pollutant removal capability, including heavy metals, dyes, and suspended solids, with bio-coagulation and adsorption. These natural coagulants' various environmental and economic advantages, including non-toxicity, biodegradability, and less sludge production, have been critically compared with traditional chemical coagulants. This paper addresses the challenges of raw material consistency, process optimization, and scalability. It also pinpoints research gaps and future directions for plant-based coagulants in wastewater treatment. This synthesis underlines the prospect of using indigenous knowledge and natural resources to enable sustainable approaches to water treatment.
