New Media Technologies and the Sustainable Development of the Rural Women of India with special reference to Titaguri village in Kokarajhar District of Assam

Abstract

During the last two decades there has been tremendous growth in Information and Communication Technologies and the potential of the same in achieving socio-economic development is realized. As a result, experimentation with new media technology in the field of agriculture, health, governance, financial services, education and employment came into being. It is clearly evident that knowledge and attitude change among rural communities is brought about by the use of new media technologies today and a large amount of information is disseminated through it. New skills are being acquired through new media, thus creating new opportunities for women. The existing dichotomy between the rural and urban areas and also between men and women seems to be deliberate constrain in realizing of the full potential of new media in reaching rural women. The paper documents the experiences of women in rural areas who use new media technologies for information accessing and to improve their livelihoods. It also evaluates the main features of changes that the use of new media technologies has brought into the lives of women in these rural pockets. Moreover, it also documents how the use of new media technologies by rural women has empowered them in their social lives and how the same has enhanced a degree of safety and security in their day to day living. The research paper is exploratory in nature. The researcher has used a triangulation method which is a combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches. To reach to the goals the researcher has conducted a sample survey to collect the primary data. To obtain a valid outcome the researcher has taken an adequate number of samples. The paper highlights that despite severe digital divide prevalent in context of rural India, information and communication technology as a magic tool benefits every section of the society. It harps on women issues particularly who are considered as economically and socially marginalized section of the society.
