Title

Extra-Curricular Activities and English Oral Communication Skills Development In Selected Public Secondary Schools In Rwanda A Case of Ngoma District.

Abstract

Abstract: The developed study was to examine the influence of extracurricular activities on English oral communication skills in public secondary schools of Ngoma district. The three specific objectives which guided this study were: to determine various extracurricular activities performed by students in public secondary schools in Ngoma district, to identify English oral communication skills developed and to examine the influence of extracurricular activities on English oral communication skills development in public secondary schools Ngoma district. This study used descriptive survey and correlation research designs and the study population was 215 people including students, teachers and the school administrators corresponding to 159 respondents as the sample size was found by using Solvin’ formula. Questionnaires and guided interviews were used as data collection instruments. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze quantitative data, thematic approach to analyze qualitative data while inferential statistics like regression analysis was used to achieve objective three. Tables, graphs and charts were used to present the collected data that was analyzed by using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21. The quantitative findings were presented using tables, charts and textual model. The findings on objective one revealed that average of 37.23% of students agreed that they actively participate in extracurricular activities performed in schools. However, the majority of teachers with the mean of 3.30 revealed that games and sport are likely to be done by students in school compound after class. On objective two, the findings revealed that that the average of 22.43% of agreed that they express effective English oral communication skills development. However, the majority of teachers teaching in selected public secondary schools agreed with the mean of 3.40 that their students make their own presentation in English effectively. On the third objective, there is 44.8% of extracurricular activities able to influence the level of English oral communication skills to students in public secondary schools as R square = .448. This implies that the remaining 55.2% of English oral communication skills could be influenced by other factors. On the other hand, the findings also revealed that there is a statically significance high degree of positive relationship between extracurricular activities and English oral communication skills development to students thus P-value = .000 which < .01 as the level of significance and Pearson coefficient of correlation r = .669. The study recommends that MINEDUC should effectively provide various professional training related to the implementation of ECA to teachers. The researcher suggests that further study can be conducted basing on finding the influence of ECA on students’ academic performance in Rwanda.
