Title

Study on the Physiological effect of Genistein, an Isoflavone, on Blood Glucose Level in Albino rat.

Abstract

In the recent decades, there has been a significant rise in the incidence of hyperglycemia and other metabolic disorders worldwide. In the contemporary times, interest in phytoestrogens, particularly those found in soy-based foods, has fueled research into their potential health effects. Phytoestrogens have garnered significant attention due to their widespread presence in the diet, leading to increased consumption of isoflavone-rich foods, such as those containing genistein and daidzein. This study investigates the interactions between plant-derived compounds and physiological processes, with a focus on how genistein, a soy isoflavone, tends to influence blood glucose level in inbred albino rats. Two dosages of genistein (0.2 mg/kg body weight/day and 0.4 mg/kg body weight/day) were administered to two groups of 3-month-old rats respectively with an average body weight of 110 grams. The results show that both fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels gradually increased following genistein administration. These findings suggest a complex relationship between plant-based dietary components and metabolic processes, emphasizing the need to better understand the impact of phytoestrogens on health outcomes in the context of dietary habits and environmental factors.

Key Words
