The method of Levi-Strauss might best be described as a process of decomposition and recomposition: mythological narratives are decomposed by identifying and charting their most elementary constituent units termed mythemes, on the analogy with the smallest units of spoken language, phonemes. In this method, the social strengthening aspect of myth comes about via a dialectical progression in which the narrative encompasses thesis, antithesis, and synthesis and thereby provides a logical model capable of overcoming a contradiction, resolving a conflict in the assumptions upon which the social structure rests. Through his structural approach, Strauss sets out to describe the real dynamics of the logical mechanisms of primitive thought and to develop a methodical approach to the study of myth, which he defines as the most representative product of the worldview of archaic cultures.
