Title

DIETARY PATTERNS AND EXERCISE IN THE SECONDARY PREVENTION OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Secondary prevention strategies are essential to reduce the recurrence of cardiovascular events in individuals with established disease. Among these, dietary patterns and regular exercise are critical lifestyle interventions. This abstract explores the synergistic effects of dietary modifications and physical activity on secondary prevention in CVD patients. Evidence suggests that a heart-healthy diet, such as the Mediterranean or DASH diet, characterized by high intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, plays a pivotal role in improving cardiovascular outcomes. These diets have been associated with reductions in blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and systemic inflammation, which are key contributors to disease progression. Concurrently, regular aerobic and resistance exercise enhances cardiac function, improves endothelial health, and reduces risk factors like hypertension, obesity, and insulin resistance. This review highlights the importance of integrating personalized dietary and exercise interventions into standard CVD management plans. Moreover, adherence to these lifestyle modifications is critical, requiring multidisciplinary approaches and patient education. Future research should focus on optimizing the combination of diet and exercise for diverse populations to further reduce CVD burden globally.
