Title

Traditional Housing System of the Bodos and Its Adaptation to Modern Needs: An Analytical Study

Authors

Abstract

Abstract: The Bodos, one of the largest tribal communities in Assam, India, have a distinct cultural identity. It is their rich culture that has identified them as a mentionable tribe in Northeast India. Among the others, the traditional housing system is deeply rooted in their culture. Traditionally, they followed numerous rites and rituals in the case of housing system. Selection of suitable plots and sites for housing are determined as per the traditional beliefs and rituals of society which were found commonly till the last part of the 20th century. They used required materials for housing from the natural resources that are available surrounding their location. But in modern society with changing times and situations they adapted to modern needs. Now they use modern durable things to construct houses. The selection of plot and site is done in a modern way. This paper explores the rituals of selection of plot and site, architectural characteristics of traditional Bodo houses, their socio-cultural significance, and the challenges posed by modernity. It further examines how the Bodos have adapted their housing practices to meet contemporary needs while striving to preserve their cultural heritage. Field surveys, interviews, and case studies reveal that while traditional designs prioritize sustainability and community cohesion, external pressures such as urbanization, economic changes, and climate impacts challenge these norms. The findings highlight innovative adaptations that blend traditional practices with modern technologies, ensuring functionality and resilience. This research not only contributes to the understanding of Bodo housing but also offers insights into broader discussions on cultural preservation and sustainable development in the face of modernization.
