Title

Exploring the Unani Perspective on Gout (Niqras): Insights and Management Strategies

Abstract

The Unani medical system refers to gout as Niqras and it is one of the earliest known ailments. And Galen (Jalinoos) Rhaze's (Zakariya Rhazi, 860–923 A.D.) elucidates that Arthritis (Wajaul Mafasil), Sciatica (Irq–un-Nisa), and Gout (Niqras) belong in the same category and that the differences in their names correspond to the various places in which they manifest. Hippocrate's notion of the four Humors (Akhlat) is the foundation of the Unani medical system. The accumulation of Morbid material (Mawad-e-Fasida) in the joint spaces and humoural temperament disturbance are the primary causes of the pathological changes in the joints, according to Unani hypothesis. Prominent Unani physician Ibn-Hubal stated that the majority of people affected by Niqras are those whose bodies are unable to eliminate excess humors (Akhlat), which cause the humors to remain inside the body and build up around joints and other bodily tissues. These humors cause an inflammatory reaction resulting in an acute flare, characterized by the afflicted joints becoming heated, swollen, painful, and red very quickly. The current study's goal was to determine the Unani concept as described in Unani classical literatures regarding the various causes, symptoms, and management of this common arthritic disorder by renowned Unani physicians to disseminate information about home remedies, preventative measures, ways to get better, and how to manage gout using Unani compound formulations that are not only readily available but also safe for human use. In light of this, we can conclude that the care of this musculoskeletal condition will greatly benefit from disseminating knowledge regarding the many potent Unani components and general treatment methods that Unani physicians have utilized since ancient times.
