Water that is generated in high volumes by metal processing industries, such as mining, smelting, plating, and machining, is polluted with heavy metals, oils, suspended solids, and many other hazardous materials. The improper disposal of wastewater from such industrial activities without or not adequately treating it has resulted in huge threats to the environment and health, which affects aquatic ecosystems, soil quality, and human health. This review research includes various wastewater treatment methods for metal processing industries. A comprehensive detailed analysis of traditional physicochemical methods: coagulation/flocculation, filtration, adsorption, and chemical precipitation, as well as biological treatments with emerging and innovative approaches such as membrane technologies, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, and nanotechnology applications. Each of these methods is evaluated according to its effectiveness, advantages, drawbacks, and applicability to different types of metal processing wastewater. By synthesizing such knowledge, the paper seeks to enrich how this technology should be managed in the future when it comes to its use in the metal processing industry regarding more efficient, eco-friendly, and cheaper technological advancement in treatment.
