Title

The Role of Nuclear Fusion in Superheavy Element Synthesis: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract

The synthesis of superheavy elements (SHEs), defined as those with atomic numbers (Z) greater than 104, represents a cutting-edge area of nuclear physics research. These exotic nuclei, existing solely due to quantum shell effects that counteract the strong Coulomb repulsion of their many protons, challenge our fundamental understanding of nuclear structure, stability limits, and the fundamental forces governing nuclear matter. Nuclear fusion reactions, particularly heavy-ion fusion, have been the cornerstone of SHE production. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the crucial role of nuclear fusion in SHE synthesis, exploring the intricate experimental techniques, the complexities of theoretical models used to describe these reactions, the significant challenges encountered, and the exciting future directions in this dynamic and challenging field.
