Title

Systematic Exploration of Charak Sharir Sthan's Theories of Embryology and Human Development

Abstract

Abstract: This review systematically explores the theories of embryology and human development as detailed in Charak Sharir Sthan, a crucial section of the foundational Ayurvedic text, Charak Samhita. The objective of this study is to bridge ancient Ayurvedic insights with contemporary embryological science, offering a comprehensive understanding of fetal development and influencing factors. Utilizing the PRISMA methodology, 13 high-quality studies were identified and analyzed, encompassing primary texts, commentaries, and comparative modern research. Key findings highlight the integration of physical, metaphysical, and spiritual elements in Charak’s embryological theories, including the interplay of Shukra (sperm), Artava (ovum), Atma (soul), and Panchamahabhutas (five elements) in fetal development. The review underscores the parallels between Charak’s monthly developmental milestones and modern trimesters, alongside practical implications for maternal nutrition, lifestyle, and stress management. Additionally, the study discusses the relevance of Charak’s preventive measures and holistic approaches to modern prenatal care and developmental biology. Comparative analysis reveals commonalities such as the significance of maternal well-being and divergences in conceptual frameworks, particularly metaphysical elements like Karma. This review advocates for interdisciplinary research to experimentally validate Ayurvedic principles and suggests their integration into contemporary medical practices for holistic healthcare solutions.
