Title

Developing life skills for children with hearing impairment through parenting

Abstract

Developing life skills in children with hearing impairment (HI) is essential for fostering their independence, social integration, and overall well-being. Parenting plays a pivotal role in this developmental process, helping children navigate the challenges of communication, self-advocacy, and emotional regulation. This paper explores effective strategies that parents can use to promote life skills in children with HI, including the use of sign language, visual communication tools, and speech therapy to enhance communication. It emphasizes the importance of building independence through routine setting, decision-making, and self-care practices, while also fostering social skills and emotional intelligence. The paper discusses how parents can encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and conflict resolution, alongside promoting safety awareness and academic success. By integrating assistive technologies and encouraging a positive Deaf identity, parents can empower children with hearing impairment to thrive in diverse environments. Ultimately, the goal is to provide children with the tools necessary to lead independent, fulfilling lives, while navigating the world around them with confidence and resilience.
