Title

Unveiling the Sacred and the Symbolic: Angkor Wat as an Icon of Cambodian National Identity, Mythology, and Pride

Authors

Abstract

Abstract: Angkor Wat, one of the world's most iconic architectural marvels, serves as a profound symbol of Cambodian national identity, mythology, and pride. The 9th–15th century Angkorian state was Southeast Asia’s great-est premodern empire and it is one of the largest religious monuments. This paper explores the historical, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of Angkor Wat, tracing its evolution from a sacred Hindu temple to a Buddhist sanctuary and a revered national emblem. By analyzing its architectural grandeur, religious significance, and representation in Cambodian folklore and modern-day symbols, such as the national flag, the study highlights how Angkor Wat transcends its role as a historical site to embody the soul of the Cambodian people. The research also examines the global perception of Angkor Wat as a heritage site and its influence on Cambodia's socio-political narrative and tourism economy. This investigation underscores the enduring relevance of Angkor Wat as both a sacred monument and a unifying symbol of Cambodian heritage and resilience.
