Title

A FRACTIONAL REPLACEMENT OF COCONUT SHELL AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO COARSE AGGREGATE IN CONCRETE

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of replacing coarse aggregate with coconut shell in concrete on the compressive strength and material properties. The relationship between the percentage of coarse aggregate and coconut shell is explored at varying replacement levels, with the average compressive strength measured at 28 days. The results show that as the coconut shell content increases, the compressive strength decreases. The specific gravity of coarse aggregate (2.67) is higher than that of coconut shell (1.45), indicating that coconut shell is lighter and less dense. Additionally, the water absorption rate of coconut shell (23.41%) is significantly higher than that of coarse aggregate (1.74%), highlighting its greater capacity to retain water. The percentage difference in compressive strength reveals a substantial reduction in strength with higher replacement levels, with a 34.37% decrease observed at 100% coconut shell replacement. Despite these reductions, the use of coconut shell as a partial replacement for coarse aggregate presents an opportunity for sustainable concrete production, offering benefits such as reduced material costs, potential lightweight concrete, and the recycling of waste materials. The findings suggest that coconut shell can be effectively utilized for partial replacement, particularly at lower percentages, without significantly compromising the strength of the concrete.
