Title

ALLELOPATHIC EFFECT OF INVASIVE WEED, SYNEDRELLA NODIFLORA ON SEED GERMINATION AND SEEDLING GROWTH OF CUCUMBER AND PUMPKIN

Authors

Abstract

Allelopathy refers to the beneficial and harmful effects of one plant on another plant both crop and weed species, by the release of chemicals from the plant parts by leaching, exudation, volatilization, residue decomposition and other process in both natural and agricultural systems. The work was undertaken in an attempt to study the effect of aqueous extracts of whole plant of Synedrella nodiflora on the seed germination and seedling growth of Cucumis sativus and Cucurbita maxima. In both cases, the rate of seed germination and seedling growth was found to be reduced in higher concentrations of the extract. The rate of seed germination and seedling growth of Cucurbita maxima has reduced than the Cucumis sativus. So whole plant extract of Synedrella nodiflora has more inhibitory effect on growth of Cucurbita maxima. This may be due to the allelochemicals present in the extract of Synedrella nodiflora become more effective and active in Cucurbita maxima. In addition to this phytochemical analysis of the whole plant extract of Synedrella nodiflora was also conducted. This reveals that steroids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids are present and saponins and Alkaloids are absent in it. Key words: Allelopathy, Phytochemicals, Seed germination
