Title

Can Nursing Interventional Program Be Effective In Improving Psychological Well-Being Of Elderly In Rural Community?

Abstract

Introduction/Objectives: Co-morbidities are more prevalent in older adults which leave impact on their psychological well-being. An interventional and experimental researches in the rural community are required urgently to prevent and improve their psychological well-being, where health services are constantly insufficient. Methods: After developing the comprehensive nursing interventions, its’ experimentation was done among 120 rural elderly aged 60-75 years in their community, using multi stage cluster random sampling in mountainous district Nuwakot. Twelve sessions of the comprehensive nursing interventions was provided to the experimental group for six weeks continuously with the 90 minutes duration of each session twice a week. Post-interventional assessment was done for both groups after 1 month then follow-up were done to only interventional group after 3 and 6 months. Using IBM SPSS version 20.0, descriptive and inferential analysis of the data was done. Results: Mean age of the elderly was similar between the groups; 66.80 in the control group and 65.70 in the interventional group. Fifteen percent of the elderly had poor psychological well-being at baseline which improved, only 1.78% had poor and most of them (98.21%) had good well-being after one month of interventions in the interventional group. There was significant improvement in the median value of interventional group from baseline (91.50) to after one month (104) of the interventions which was stable after three (103) and six months (102) of the interventions. Conclusion: The intervention was found to be significantly effective in improving psychological well-being of the elderly living in the rural community.
