The study examined the financial and social empowerment of women in self-help groups (SHGs) across India. SHGs are village-based committees of 10-20 local women or men that manage finances and support each other. Many SHGs are linked to banks for micro-credit, enabling women to access financial facilities, send their children to school, and meet daily living expenses. The study confirmed that SHGs have achieved both financial and social empowerment goals. Analysis of secondary data showed steady growth in SHG membership, indicating their increasing popularity. The study identified key factors contributing to SHGs' success, including their connection with poor communities, innovative practices, capacity to enable participation in development, and trust-building among stakeholders. SHGs have improved household financial status, fostered self-confidence and independence among rural women, and enhanced their livelihood. By promoting financial inclusion, social empowerment, and community development, SHGs have become a vital tool for rural women's empowerment and poverty alleviation.
