Electric vehicles, consumes less energy and leads to reduction of greenhouse gas emission, are gaining popularity as a result of a number of causes, including lower prices and increased climate and environmental consciousness. Union and state governments are taking initiatives to make the people aware of and switch to electric vehicles. The present study is based on review of literatures and government reports. From the study it was found that electric vehicles contribute for the sustainability of fuel sources and air pollution can be controlled with the adoption of electric vehicles. There are various opportunities for the adoption of electric vehicles where as there are hurdles which impede in the transition to electric vehicles in Karnataka State. Government is providing tax benefits along with financial benefits to the customers and manufacturers to motivate in the transition to electric vehicles. Lack of awareness about electric vehicles, availability of battery charging stations and charging time are the major challenges in the transition to electric vehicles.
