Title

PILOT STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION AND LEARNING STYLE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN DEOGHAR

Abstract

This pilot study examines the effectiveness of achievement motivation and learning styles in influencing the academic performance of secondary school students in Deoghar, Jharkhand. Achievement motivation, a key psychological factor, drives students to achieve academic success through intrinsic and extrinsic motivators. Learning styles, categorized using the VARK model (Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, Kinesthetic), describe students' preferred methods of absorbing and processing information. A sample of 100 students (50 boys and 50 girls) from classes IX and X was selected through stratified random sampling. The Achievement Motivation Scale and VARK Learning Style Inventory were used for data collection, alongside academic performance records. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including Pearson's correlation and regression analysis, were employed to interpret the data. The findings reveal moderate to high levels of achievement motivation among students, with boys displaying slightly higher levels than girls. Intrinsic motivation was more prevalent than extrinsic motivation. Auditory and kinesthetic learning styles emerged as the most common preferences, with gender differences in dominant styles. A strong positive correlation was found between achievement motivation and kinesthetic learning styles (r=0.56r = 0.56r=0.56). Regression analysis indicated that achievement motivation is the most significant predictor of academic performance (β=0.48eta = 0.48β=0.48), followed by kinesthetic and auditory learning styles. The study highlights the interplay between achievement motivation and learning styles in shaping academic outcomes. It underscores the importance of personalized teaching strategies that align with students' motivational and learning preferences. The findings suggest that fostering intrinsic motivation and incorporating diverse instructional approaches can enhance educational outcomes for secondary school students. This research provides a foundation for future studies and interventions aimed at improving student engagement and performance in Deoghar.
