Title

Ayurvedic Approach To Mental Health : Addressing Anxiety And Depression

Abstract

Ayurveda aims at preservation and promotion of health and prevention and cure of diseases through the concepts of positive physical and mental health. Here Ayu is life which is the combined state of body, senses, mind and soul. The Sharir (body) is the physical body which is operated through rest three components i.e. senses (indriyas), mind (satva), soul (atma). Manas or Satva is an important concept to understand the manifestation of psychic and Psychosomatic disorder in the present era. Psychosomatic disorder can cause physical and mental symptoms and illness. So, Anxiety and Depression can be the Psychosomatic disorders. Anxiety is the most common mental health disorder where as Depression is the second most common. Depression is a state of low mood and aversion of activity where as for people with Anxiety disorders worry and fear are constant and overwhelming and can be crippling. In Ayurveda, Anxiety can be associated with Chittoudvega while Depression can be associated with Vishada/ Avasada/ Kaphaja Unmada. This paper explores the factors responsible for Anxiety and Depression as well as their symptoms, prevention, treatment and other important aspects through Ayurvedic approach.
