Title

The Evolution of Female Agency in Alice Walker's Protagonists: A Comparative Analysis of The Color Purple, Meridian, and Possessing the Secret of Joy.

Abstract

This paper explores the evolution of female agency in Alice Walker's major works: The Color Purple, Meridian, and Possessing the Secret of Joy. Through a comparative analysis of the protagonists—Celie, Meridian, and Tashi—the study examines their journeys toward empowerment, self-discovery, and liberation from patriarchal and colonial oppression. Walker’s narratives illustrate the intersectionality of race, gender, and class, showcasing how societal shifts influence the portrayal of female strength over two decades of literary production. The protagonists’ transformations underscore the broader evolution of Black feminist thought, emphasizing the interconnectedness of personal and communal resistance. The study provides critical insights into Walker’s nuanced depiction of resilience, agency, and the complex dynamics of identity in a changing sociopolitical landscape.
