Title

TREATMENT OF SLAUGHTERHOUSE WASTEWATER USING PACKED-CAGE ROTATING BIOLOGICAL CONTACTOR WITH BIO BALLS FILTER AS MEDIA

Abstract

The Philippines' expanding population necessitates a strong demand for quick meat production in the late 1990s. Public slaughterhouses were built to handle the rising demand for meat products and the burgeoning livestock population in a community. The study discovered that the use of packed-cage RBC technology with bio balls media produced promising results for pollutant removal. PCRBC 2's average BOD5 removal efficiency was 93.59%, whereas PCRBC 1's removal efficiency was higher at 93.93%. Both PCRBC 1 and PCRBC 2 showed interesting removal rates for TSS, with mean removal efficiencies of 84.67% and 80.75%. With mean removal efficiencies of 18.83% and 6.68%, respectively, the removal of oil and grease from PCRBC 1 and PCRBC 2 was accomplished at low removal rates. Based on the results and findings of this study, it is apparent that further research is necessary to fully understand the effectiveness and overall performance of the packed- cage RBC technology as a treatment alternative for slaughterhouse wastewater. As such, the following recommendations are put forward for future researchers in this field: explore different media types, utilize a larger surface area for the packed-cage RBC system and other method of distributing the wastewater, consider other significant parameters to be tested and studied such as temperature, pH ammonia, nitrate and phosphate as indicated in the significant parameters of slaughtering and meat packing stipulated in DAO 2016-08, and conduct studies on the long-term efficiency of packed-cage RBC.
